Definitions

Service provider

The company contracted to provide for the maintenance of fire equipment at the University.

Fire equipment

Materials and products that are used in the detection or extinguishing of fire. These include:

  • fire detection and alarm systems
  • portable fire extinguishers
  • fire blankets
  • fire hose reels
  • deluge systems
  • associated signage and equipment

Responsible persons and actions

Associate Director, Safety, Health and Wellbeing

  • Administers and manages fire equipment in buildings at The University of Western Australia and ensures compliance with the Building Code of Australia and Australian Standards
  • Advises Finance and Systems Manager in Facilities Management by July of the preceding year, of funds required for purchase of fire equipment and maintenance and replacement of existing fire equipment for the following year

New buildings and alterations

The provision of fire equipment in new buildings and alterations is funded from the project budget.

Responsible persons and actions

Project Manager
  • Obtains advice on the type and quantity of fire equipment required in new buildings from the Associate Director, Safety, Health and Wellbeing
  • Authorises purchase of fire equipment by Safety and Health Office to be funded from project budget
Associate Director, Safety, Health and Wellbeing
  • Provides Project Manager with guidelines for placement of fire equipment in new buildings or alterations
Project Manager
  • Arranges placement of fire equipment in new buildings and alterations in accordance with the Building Code of Australia and relevant Australian Standards

Omission of fire equipment from projects

Responsible persons and responsibility

Associate Director, Safety, Health and Wellbeing
  • Requests Project Manager to provide equipment from maintenance funds where provision has not been made in new buildings or alterations for fire equipment (expenditure less than $500)
Project Manager
  • Obtains approval prior to ordering from Associate Director, Facilities Operations, to provide new fire equipment from maintenance funds (expenditure less than $500). Where expenditure is greater than $500, a request for funding is made from Minor Works submission to Director, Facilities Management
