Cleaning, waste and recycling

Our contractors, ISS Facility Services, manage the University’s cleaning, waste and recycling services.

They provide a comprehensive service at most UWA institutional buildings on a year-round basis, with the exception of a few that are managed independently or resourced internally.

Cleaning

Cleaning services

  • ISS Facility Service will provide comprehensive regular and periodical cleaning to buildings, including internal spaces and external elements such as building entries and outdoor covered walkways.
  • Special cleaning will be commissioned by Campus Management at additional rates.
  • Regular inspections and audits will be carried out by ISS Facility Services, UWA management and an independent auditor to ensure a high quality is maintained and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are met.
    • Cleaning within buildings commences at 6 am, and any disruptive activities such as use of noisy machinery, completed by 8 am. Cleaning activities include:

      Toilets/washrooms

      On a daily basis, bins are emptied, dispensers refilled, toilet fixtures cleaned and sanitised, floors swept and damp mopped. Sanitary units are replaced in toilets monthly, and new units installed where required.

      Office areas

      Bins are emptied weekly, carpets vacuumed and surfaces dusted (where accessible and safe) weekly.

      Internal spaces, including public space, corridors and foyers

      Bins are emptied daily, floors vacuumed or mopped weekly, and spot cleaning of horizontal surfaces and/or glass as required.

      Teaching spaces, including general research spaces and laboratories

      Bins are emptied daily, carpets vacuumed weekly, along with spot clean of desktops. Whiteboard surfaces cleaned weekly.

      Lunchrooms and kitchens

      On a daily basis, bins are emptied, sinks and bench tops cleaned and sanitised, and vinyl floors damp mopped. Floors are stripped and sealed annually.

      Additional cleaning services available at an additional fee:
      • Specific school cleaning
      • Special cleaning such as carpet and upholstery cleaning, window cleaning (above 2.1 metres) and high pressure cleaning
      • Emergency cleaning
      • Cleaning for pre and post events - with Theatres and Venues

Waste

Waste services – internal to buildings

  • ISS Facility Services are responsible for the collection and disposal of waste located within and outside buildings.
  • Waste collection in common areas and 60 litre Bin Stations will occur on a daily basis as part of the general cleaning services provided within buildings.
  • All waste collected within building spaces will be placed into external bins by cleaning staff for daily collection.
    • Waste services - external to buildings

      • ISS Facility Services has partnered with waste service provider SUEZ to facilitate the collection and disposal of external general and commingled (mixed) waste bins.
      • Waste services will be provided to all buildings, except those where waste services are contracted independently.
      • ISS Facility Services and SUEZ will work with the University to implement best waste management practices and recycling strategies.

Recycling

Our contractors facilitate the collection and disposal of external general and commingled (mixed) waste bins.

The contract includes the provision of waste services to all buildings, except those where waste services are contracted independently.

The contractor manages other waste removal, including furniture or bulky items as needed. Fee-for-service applies.

Services outside the contract

Campus Management has negotiated fixed rates with our contractor for the provision of cleaning and waste services outside the contract specifications. Schools who independently procure cleaning and waste services are encouraged to take advantage of these competitive rates. Schools may request additional services at their own cost to support special events or other activities not covered within the contract.

Design and construction standards

The UWA Design and Construction Standards specifies the minimum requirements for the design and construction of UWA projects by architects, consultants, contractors and project managers. These standards must be referred to when designing and specifying any new facilities or refurbishing existing buildings at UWA.

These standards also provide facility managers, maintenance contractors and other service providers with an understanding of UWA services in order to assist in the maintenance and operation of facilities.

Relevant Legislation

The planning, design and construction of each UWA facility must fully comply with the current relevant legislation, including (but not limited to):

  • Relevant Australian or Australian/New Zealand Standards (AS/NZS)
  • National Construction Code (NCC)
  • Occupation Safety and Health (OSH) legislation
  • Disability Discrimination Act (DDA)
  • Accessibility Aspiration Design Factors
  • Local council and authority requirements

Building and Services Documentations Guidelines

The purpose of the As Constructed specification is to clearly state the documentation and required format for all “As Constructed” drawings and associated data including assets, specifications, manuals and test reports. It is a requirement of the contract that all data is presented in the correct format required by the University.
